On any given Sunday “Big John” Konchan could be spotted in the front pew of the church and was probably one of the most recognized parishioners of St. John of the Cross. He was the guy always wearing a sports jersey with his most loved Browns attire being his favorite. His casual attire might have raised a few eyebrows over the years but his support of Cleveland’s football team never faltered. John’s quiet demeanor belied his size and he was a constant source of support in the St. John of the Cross community. He could be seen taking the place of a missing Eucharistic minister, helping with cleaning the chalices and ciboriums after Mass or tossing a few dollars from the wallet he kept chained to his belt to any charity that asked. On December 21 John was called home to our Lord and will now be watching his beloved Browns from the best seat in the house. Since his passing his seat in church has stayed empty almost waiting for him to walk in for Mass, but this past Sunday, January 21 the pew was filled once again. On what would have been John’s 62nd birthday several parishioners donned their Brown’s attire or flannel shirts to celebrate the life of this gentle giant. The outpouring of love and support for John spread from the epicenter of his seat through the church as people recognized what was happening. Smiling and nodding could be seen as people realized it was a celebration for this much loved parishioner. It was a beautiful moment showcasing the faith and family that is St. John of the Cross Parish.
