Altar servers are parishioners, both adults and children (who are at least in third grade), who desire to assist the priest at Mass by helping to set up before Mass as well as by serving during the Mass. They serve as liturgical ministers with special tasks to perform, and will be properly trained before taking on this special ministry of service that gives glory to God.
This is a ministry of the Church, for the Church. The art and environment of our church is an integral part of the experience of our communal prayer and can contribute to the beauty and richness with the mystery of God among us. Members of Art & Environment use their gifts to work together to create a beautiful and prayerful worship space that is in keeping with the Church’s seasons and Holy Days. Members need not attend all meetings, but should be available for work sessions of setting up and taking down.
These liturgical minsters serve Christ who is present in the assembly by distributing His Body and Blood to their brothers and sisters. Many also minister to the sick and homebound by taking Communion to them and praying with them on a regular basis. By the way that they live their lives, they are called to give testimony to Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. Training is provided by the Diocese and by our parish.
These are often the first people that parishioners and visitors see at Mass. It is an opportunity to express God’s love through Christ and help set the tone of the upcoming worship service.
Standing at or near the doors of the church, they welcome people to Mass and say farewell at the end of Mass, acting as ambassadors of the hospitality offered by Christ.
Lectors proclaim the first and second readings, the Word of God, at Mass. They are ministers who use their gifts to help bring the scriptures to life through thoughtful, prayerful proclamation. This ministry requires practice and devotion to the study of the Word of God.
Ushers are men and women who share the welcome of Christ by helping to provide for the comfort of people during liturgies and assist people with any special needs that they may have. They also receive the gifts of the people by taking up the collection.
